Mission Possible: Dave’s House Party Showcases Community Collaboration and Bold Expansion Plans

Dave’s House, a Central Florida nonprofit providing permanent supportive housing for adults with serious mental illness, recently hosted its annual fundraising gala, Dave’s House Party: Mission Possible on September 20th at the Sheraton Orlando North in Maitland, Florida. The well attended event brought together civic leaders, sponsors, and community partners for an evening that celebrated the organization’s mission and unveiled exciting new plans for growth.

A Collaborative Tapestry

What made Dave’s House Party stand out was not only the performances or fundraising, but the tapestry of collaboration woven throughout the evening. From nonprofit partners to healthcare leaders, first responders, and philanthropists, the event reflected how deeply this community is invested in solving the challenges of homelessness and mental illness. As Dave’s House expands its reach, the message was clear: with collaboration, compassion, and vision, building homes also means building futures filled with dignity, purpose, and hope.

Honoring Leadership

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the 2025 Dr. Joel C. Hunter Legacy Award to Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings. The award recognized Mayor Demings’ leadership in expanding affordable housing and mental health resources. Accepting on his behalf were Shannon Gravitte, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for AdventHealth and Terry Prather, Board Chair of Dr. Phillips Charities, who shared remarks about the Mayor’s commitment to building a healthy and strong community.

Mission Moment

In one of the evening’s most powerful moments, residents of Dave’s House took the stage with nonprofit partner Chance 2Dance, delivering a performance that brought the audience to its feet. It wasn’t just entertainment — it was a living illustration of resilience, talent, and joy made possible by the stability of permanent supportive housing.

At Dave’s House, residents thrive because they have both a safe place to call home and access to the supportive services they need. With a 90% housing retention rate, residents are not just surviving — they are building lives filled with purpose. Each day, they engage in productive activities, from continuing education to volunteering to meaningful work. This structure and support provide the stability to manage life’s obstacles, live in recovery, and pursue personal dreams.

The men and women who call Dave’s House home each carry unique stories of struggle and perseverance. Their journeys of recovery stand as the beating heart of the organization’s mission. They remind us that permanent supportive housing does more than put a roof overhead — it transforms lives, empowers individuals, and restores dignity.

Heroes Auction

The evening also featured a spirited Heroes Auction, led by community champions including Chief Charles Salazar of the Orlando Fire Department and Chief Luis Quinones of Orange County Corrections, with support from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Their leadership energized the crowd, raising critical funds to fuel Dave’s House programs.

The theme of the auction was simple yet powerful: heroes come in many forms. From frontline firefighters and law enforcement officers, to healthcare professionals and correctional leaders, the auction shined a spotlight on those who dedicate their lives to protecting, healing, and serving others.

Adding to the excitement, the Heroes Auction offered three unique “Hero for a Day” experiences, giving guests the chance to step into the shoes of everyday heroes. Whether riding alongside first responders, shadowing correctional officers, or engaging with healthcare professionals, these one-of-a-kind opportunities reminded everyone that heroism takes many shapes—and that, together, our community is stronger because of it.

Big Announcement

The most significant moment of the evening was the announcement of Dave’s House’s newest development milestone: the planned Dave’s House at Celery Community in Sanford. Developed in partnership with Community Assisted & Supported Living (CASL) and HomeAid Orlando, the five-acre community will feature eight duplex homes and a 3,500-square-foot community center with wraparound behavioral health services. Backed by a $1 million Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta grant and a land gift from Family of Friends, Inc., the project will more than double Dave’s House’s capacity and serve as a replicable model for supportive housing across Florida. Looking Ahead

The spirit of Dave’s House Party was more than an evening of celebration — it was a call to action. The stories shared, the partnerships announced, and the performances on stage all pointed to one truth: when a community unites around housing and mental health, lives are transformed.

As Dave’s House takes its next steps toward building a first-of-its-kind residential community, the organization carries with it the strength of those who believe in this mission. Together, we are not only addressing urgent needs today, but laying the foundation for a future where every individual has the chance to live with safety, dignity, and purpose.
